Research Projects Ongoing or Completed During the Last 3 Years
"Controlled Cartilage Repair"
Principal Investigator: Victor M. Goldberg, MD
Agency: National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases
Type: R01 (AR37726, years 10-13). Period: March 1, 1996 to November 30, 1999
The major goal of this project is to study the role of articular cartilage chondrocytes
and mesenchymal stem cells in articular cartilage repair.
Bioactive Factors in Skeletal Repair
Principal Investigator: Arnold I. Caplan, Ph.D.
Agency: National Institutes of Health
Type: R01 (DE07220) Period: 07/01/98-05/31/03
The major goals of this project are (1) to study the factors involved in engineered
fracture repair; to determine the contribution of these stem cells to the repair
process and its effects on stem cells and the population of cells from the three
distinct stages of the osteogenic lineage; (2) to test several predictions related
to the control of engineered fracture repair at one well-defined site.
Cellular Mechanisms of Implant Loosening
Principal Investigator: Edward Greenfield, Ph.D.
Agency: National Institutes of Health
Type: R01 (AR43769-02) Period: 09/27/96-08/31/00
The major goals of this project are to (1) determine whether orthopaedic wear
debris stimulates osteoclast differentiation or osteoclast activation, (2) identify
properties of orthopaedic wear debris that are important in the stimulation
of bone resorption, (3) identify cytokines that are functionally important in
stimulation of bone resorption by orthopaedic wear debris, and (4) identfy cell
types that are functionally important in stimulation of bone resorption by orthopaedic
wear debris.
Northeast Ohio Multipurpose
Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases center
Principal Investigator: Roland Moskowtiz, M.D.
Agency: National Institutes of Health
Type: (AR2018) Period: 07/01/98-06/03/02
A comprehensive center for funding of research and demonstration projects in
basic science, musculoskeletal disease, and health services/education/epidemiology
research.
Prospective Clinical
Research Grant
Principal Investigator: Kraay
Agency: OREF Period: 07/01/99-06/30/02
Prospective Randomized Study of Zirconia Ceramic versus Co-Cr-Mo Alloy Femoral
Heads with Respect to Wear of Polyethylene Acetabular Cups in THR
The major goal of this research is to establish the rates of wear and the incidence
of osteolysis in THA using zirconia and conventional metal alloy femoral components
and to determine if there is a clinically significant difference in polyethylene
wear.
