Summer Course in Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecology for School Teachers: SUECO

Monday, July 14–Friday, July 25, 2008
9:00 AM–4:00 PM

The Department of Biology is offering a two-week Summer Ecology Program that will take place at the Biology Field Station in Hunting Valley, Ohio. It is designed for high school and middle school teachers who have an interest in current ecological problems. Participants will learn field sampling techniques and identification of a diversity of living organisms (both plant and animal). They will study the distribution and abundance of organisms and will learn about the interdependence among plants, animals, and their environments. Fieldwork in the varied habitats of Squire Valleevue Farm will be an integral part of the program. Data will be analyzed and interpreted in the on-site computer lab. Participants will receive supplies, field guides, and detailed laboratory exercises that are designed specifically for the classroom. The first week of the program will be devoted to the study of amphibians and reptiles. The emphasis will be on the identification and ecology of species found in northeastern Ohio, but the general features of all living groups will also be covered in detail. Numerous live and preserved specimens will be available for study and "keying out." In addition to fieldwork at Squire Valleevue Farm, one day will involve field trips to other locations in northeastern Ohio.
