HHMI Partnership Grants
A component of the current HHMI grant for Undergraduate Science Education to Case Western Reserve University includes a small grants program to support faculty collaboration associated with undergraduate research and training initiatives. Guided by a goal of increasing the numbers of undergraduates who will pursue research careers in the biological sciences, the purpose of these collaborations is to develop research and training partnerships that will support continuation of student research projects initiated during summer research internships into the academic year. These collaborations would enable CWRU students to pursue summer internships at other Universities and return to campus to extend the internship through independent study during the academic year or enable students from other campuses to take part in the HHMI funded Summer Program for Undergraduate Research at CWRU and continue their work at their home campuses as independent study. In either case, we expect that the faculty collaboration mechanism will sustain student collaboration during the academic year.
The grant program provides grants of $5,000 to each of the collaborating scientists. Higher awards for visiting faculty will be considered. Only joint applications for this program will be considered. Applications must contain a short (2500 character maximum) description of the research/training collaboration, a plan for undergraduate mentoring (1000 character limit), amount of funding requested for each partner, and starting date of the award.
HHMI Partnership Grant Application
All grant funds will be administered by the Department of Biology and spending must conform to HHMI guidelines. For CWRU faculty, HHMI guidelines do not permit funding of summer salary for student mentoring; otherwise, the account can be used to purchase equipment and supplies for the research or support faculty travel. For visiting faculty, the awards may be used as a stipend, funds for supplies and equipment, or for faculty travel.
Applications will be accepted at anytime and will be awarded subject to annual budget allocations.
