Dissertation Completion Fellowships

General Overview

Application Deadline: January 26, 2007

  • Available to graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University
  • Stipend: $20,000, plus one tuition waver per semester for both Fall 2007 and Spring 2008.
  • Period of Award : one year, beginning summer 2007.
  • Completed applications must be submitted to the Baker-Nord Center by January 26, 2007.
  • Decisions will be announced by the end of March 2006.
  • All monies/support associated with this award must be expended by March 30, 2008.

Made possible by a grant from the Presidential Initiative Fund, the Baker-Nord Dissertation Completion Fellowships are meant to assist graduate students in the final stages of dissertation research and writing. Three fellowships are available for the 2007-2008 academic year. The fellowships may be carried out in residence at Case or elsewhere, but may not be held congruently with any other major fellowship or grant.

Eligibility
  • The candidate will be working toward a Ph.D. to be granted in a department of the arts, humanities, or social sciences within the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University.
  • All requirements for the Ph.D. will be fulfilled before applying for the award.
  • The dissertation proposal or prospectus will already have been approved by the candidate's dissertation committee before applying.
  • The dissertation will be related in some way to the arts and/or humanities.

Application Procedure

Completed applications will include the following:
  • Application Cover Sheet
  • A proposal (max. 4 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins) including: (a) a general description of the dissertation with brief outline of its main chapters; (b) a statement of progress, indicating what the candidate has completed thus far; and (c) a plan for completing the remainder of the dissertation during the fellowship period.
  • A one-page bibliography of key texts related to the dissertation.
  • A curriculum vitae.
  • Two letters of recommendation, one from the candidate's dissertation advisor and one from another member of the candidate's dissertation committee. Letters should be sent directly to the Baker-Nord Center.

Candidates receiving awards will be required in June 2007 to submit a photograph of him/herself, a brief biographical sketch, a brief description (200 words) of his/her dissertation, and a statement regarding the award to the Baker-Nord Center for inclusion in the fall 2007 Preview magazine.
