GRADUATE PROGRAMS: JOINT MSN/MA


General Information

The Department of Anthropology and the School of Nursing have established a joint MSN/MA degree which will afford students a unique opportunity to combine the cross-cultural expertise of medical anthropology with clinical expertise in nursing.

The total MSN/MA Degree requirement is 45 hours. Students will be required to take a minimum of 18 hours and a maximum of 24 hours in the School of Nursing and a minimum of 18 hours and a maximum of 24 hours in the Department of Anthropology.

Students must pass the Comprehensive Exam in Anthropology.

This curriculum plan reflects clinical nursing majors other than midwifery.

Program Requirements

Statistics 319 or its equivalent is a prerequisite to the Nursing Master but may be taken as an elective in Anthropology (ANTH 319). Students who have completed a statistics course prior to admission must sit for the University administered exam.

Total of 21-31 credit hours

  • Clinical Major: 12-22 credit hours (depending on nursing major)
  • Professional Development N443-N444: 6 credit hours
  • Inquiry I N405 (Nursing Theory): 3 credit hours
  • Physiologic Foundations N453: 4 credit hours
  • Integrated Assessment N459: 3 credit hours
  • Pharmacology and Therapeutics N430: 3 credit hours
Required Anthropology Courses
Total of 18 credit hours

  • Anthropology of Health and Illness, Part I (480): 3 credit hours
  • Anthropology of Health and Illness, Part II (481): 3 credit hours
  • Contemporary Theory in Anthropology (462): 3 credit hours
  • Anthropology Electives in health-related courses: 6-9 credit hours
Required Research Courses
Total of 6 credit hours
