David K. ShiplerCommunity Hour Public Lecture

The Common Reading Selection Committee has selected The Working Poor: Invisible in America by David K. Shipler as the assigned summer reading for all new undergraduate students. In the book, Shipler, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, profiles the lives of Americans unable to share in America's economic prosperity and examines the causes and consequences of poverty in our society. Alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the university are invited to join us for a special public lecture in Amasa Stone Chapel.

This event is cosponsored by University Programs and Events, University Alumni Relations, The Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities, College Scholars, and the Hallinan Project.

Beyond E-mail, A Primer on Putting the Internet to Work for You

Two hours of CEU credit is available for $18.00

Many of us still don't use the vast resource of websites or libraries on-line to problem solve social work issues. Whether you don't know how to use electronic resources beyond e-mail, or are clueless about what is available out there, this workshop is for you. The Mandel School's Harris Library staff will show you how to access various library systems and proficiency, bring your questions with you. Class size is limited so reserve soon.

COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES presents Flora Stone Mather: Daughter of Cleveland's Euclid Avenue and Ohio's Western Reserve

Flora Stone Mather was at the center of many charities and organizations that addressed the physical, intellectual, cultural, and spiritual needs of Clevelanders during the late 19th century,  especially the poor, women and children  She gave generously to promote women’s education at Western Reserve University.   Rich with regional history, this biography of an influential Cleveland woman will be important reading for students of women’s studies and the history of philanthropy as well as those interested in Ohio’s Western Reserve and its people.

Gladys Haddad is professor of American studies at Case Western Reserve University, director of the Western Reserve Studies Symposia, and professor emerita of American Studies at Lake Erie College.  Her other publications include Anthology of Western Reserve Literature (Kent State University Press, 1992) with David Anderson, and Ohio’s Western Reserve (Kent State University Press, 1988), with Harry Lupold.
