Your adventure begins in York, one of England’s most historic walled cities where you will explore the Jorvik Centre, travel in your own “time cars” through a 9th-century Viking village, and revel in a Ghost Walk down York’s narrow, cobbled alleys and “snickleways.”

At Pickering, embark a steam train to the tiny station of Goathland, better known today as the rail station used by Harry Potter and his young wizard friends! At the fishing town of Whitby, climb to the ancient abbey overlooking the sea. Adults will immediately recognize the next stop - Castle Howard from the BBC television series Brideshead Revisted.

In Sherwood Forest, step back in time at the annual Robin Hood Festival, where bowmen demonstrate their skills and you will witness a medieval jousting tournament. Investigate the bleak life of an 18th-century prisoner or jailor amidst the twisted corridors of the Galleries of Justice and visit the Caves of Nottingham, a vast man-made network of 13th-century caves beneath the city streets.

Also included in your journey: a visit to Warwick Castle, one of England’s finest and best-preserved fortresses. Its magnificent staterooms contain Madame Tussaud wax figures evoking the splendor of Edwardian England. The medieval dungeon, complete with torture equipment, is not for the squeamish. Then, continue to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare and one of England’s most picturesque towns.

Accommodations minimize packing and unpacking, as only two hotels are used. Both have swimming pools and place your family in the city centers, ideal for exploring together and on one’s own.
