The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the sixth year of SWIMPY grants, the "Dream
Grant", for Senior Women in their Most Productive Years. The first two years were more successful
than we could have imagined. So far, over one hundred of you, residing in some
twenty states and two foreign countries, responded to the call, sharing with the Committee
your innermost hopes, and your "impossible dreams". Your ideas confirmed what we have
always known about women: creativity increases as we grow older. We felt privileged to be
a part of your dreams.
The 2006 grant winner, Nancy Kurfess Johnson, FSM'49, MED'54, GRS'98, was spotlighted in the Fall 2006 issue of "Mather Musings", and you will be hearing more
about her project at the FSMAA Annual Meeting on May 19th at the Shoreby Club. In addition, many
of you wrote just to express what a great idea you thought SWIMPY was, while others who
did not receive awards, wrote to say that the application process crystallized their ideas and
several planned to carry them out on their own. Keep us informed of you progress as you
move forward with these projects and we will share the information through the newsletter.
The format for the 2006 applications remains basically the same. As was the case last year,
if you submitted a grant application in 2005 that did not receive an award, you may enter the
same project one additional year. Many more worthwhile proposals were received than
awards available. And of course, new proposals from prior and first time applicants are
always welcome.
Guidelines for SWIMPY Grant Requests
Eligibility: The SWIMPY Grant is open to graduates of Flora Stone Mather College, or other
Western Reserve College, or those who have received a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of
Science, or Bachelor of Science Nursing degree from Case Western Reserve University, who
are at least 50 years old as of April 15, 2007.
Awards: Grants can range up to $5,000 in documented expenses, and are dedicated to assisting
the recipient(s) in pursuing a current or new interest, activity/career enhancement, with an
outcome that can be written or viewed in some manner. In general, projects should focus on
an activity rather than the purchase of equipment. Sorry, funds toward enrollment in graduate
programs are ineligible.
Criteria: Selection will be based upon committee review of the completed application,
including a detailed budget, a description of the project, and commitment to present the project
at the FSMAA Annual Meeting, scheduled for May 19, 2007.
Submission Requirements:
- Receipt of all application materials by the Office of Alumni Affairs by April
15, 2007; notification by May 15, 2007. To apply please submit this
printable .pdf application form.
- Completion of project by May 15, 2008.
- Written report to FSMAA within 30 days after completion of the project,
but no later than May 15, 2008.
- Winners are obligated to present their projects at the May 2007
FSMAA Annual Meeting.
