THE RACE AT CASEOctober 5: Vice Presidential Debate at Case Western Reserve University Although the debate is five months away, the university is planning a series of events to encourage discussion and thoughtful dialogue about issues in the 2004 election. UNIVERSITY NEWSDNC SELECTS ALUMNA AS CO-CHAIRThe Democratic National Committee has named alumna and Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (FSM '71, LAW '74) a co-chair of the organization, along with Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois. The two will work with DNC chairperson Terry McAuliffe to coordinate the campaign message and agenda and help get the vote for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. COMMENCEMENT SET FOR MAY 16The University will celebrate COMMENCEMENT 2004 on Sunday, May 16 in the Veale Convocation, Recreation, and Athletic Center. Keynote speaker will be Elie Wiesel, a 1986 Nobel Peace Prize winner and a professor of humanities at Boston University. ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM RECOGNIZEDThe Case Western Reserve University Weatherhead School of Management ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM is one of the top 50 national entrepreneurial programs among colleges and universities in the United States. "CLEVELAND MAGAZINE" FEATURES CASE LAW STUDENTSThe April issue of "Cleveland Magazine" reports on a class project by five Case Western Reserve University School of Law students who are working to help bring former Liberian President Charles Taylor to justice for crimes against humanity. To read the entire story, visit: http://www.clevelandmagazine.com. PROVOST ADDRESSES CONSORTIUM ABOUT TECHNOLOGY, NEW VENTURESJohn L. Anderson, new provost and university vice-president, will discuss "CASE IN THE REGION: PARTNERSHIP WITH NORTHEAST OHIO," at the State of Ohio Colon Cancer Consortium/-David Deioma Lecture. The Institute for the Integration of Management and Engineering (TIIME) and the Case School of Engineering are co-hosting the event, held to educate the public about aspects of technology-based new venture creation and entrepreneurship. The event will be Wednesday, May 19 at Severance Hall. A reception will begin at 5:00 p.m., followed by the presentation at 6:00 p.m. Additionally, TIIME will announce the winners of the 2004 CASE Business Launch Competition. The chapter will meet at the White House Inn, 4940 Mulhauser Road, in West Chester. The event is from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. and includes lunch. Cost is $20. BOLD NEW INITIATIVES AHEADIn response to its vision to be the world's most powerful learning environment, the university recognizes the importance of aligning its diverse alumni constituents and strengthening its programs and engagement. As plans move forward to establish an alumni house on campus, excitement is building for a BOLD NEW ALUMNI ORGANIZATION. On April 24th, Case Western Reserve University Alumni Association Council adopted a resolution to reorganize its current structure in order to become a more effective and engaging alumni organization. CASE ONLINE SERVICES LAUNCHEDWith the creation of the CASE ONLINE SERVICES program, the university has changed to a free, convenient e-mail forwarding service. Your Case User ID entitles you to a forwarding e-mail address that will not change when you change jobs or e-mail providers. To activate this e-mail forwarding service, you will need to provide a forwarding address. All messages sent to your Case Western Reserve University e-mail address (e.g., xyz123@alumni.case.edu) will be automatically forwarded to an e-mail address that you designate. Please note: You will not be able to use the Case User ID e-mail address as an e-mail account because it does not have its own "inbox." The university remains committed to providing alumni with the best service and support and plans to continue to develop a valuable online community for all alumni. MANDEL SCHOOL SEEKS VOLUNTEERSCatherine Ferrer (MNO '91), executive director of the AMERICA FOUNDATION FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION OF NORTHEAST OHIO (AFSP), needs volunteers with a degree in social work, counseling, healthcare, teaching, or a related field to work with high school students, educating them about the risk factors of suicide and the symptoms of depression. To date, AFSP has taught 13,000 students in 36 Greater Cleveland high schools. The organization's mission is to prevent suicide through research and education, to conduct programs for parents and professionals, and to support surviving family members and friends of individuals who have taken their own lives. NOMINATE SPEAKER FOR COMMENCEMENT 2005The COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER COMMITTEE seeks your input and suggestions for a speaker for the university's Commencement 2005. The ideal speaker reflects excellence in any valued aspect of human endeavor, including the realm of scholarship, public service, and the performing arts. The selection of the speaker is the university's way of recognizing a person who has exemplified in their work the highest ideals and standards, while providing a valuable experience for graduates and other participants in the commencement exercises. The MBA graduate, a stutterer, is a nationally recognized motivational speaker. His communication skills landed him a role as a coauthor of a new book, "Real World Leadership Strategies that Work," by Insight Publishing.
