UNIVERSITY NEWS

JASON XV: RAINFOREST AT THE CROSSROADS

Join JASON Project researchers in a live, interactive broadcast as they explore Barrio Colorado Island on January 31, to learn about this tropical environment. Students from Northeast Ohio and around the world will participate in this real science experience. You must register to participate. Refer to http://www.jason.org or e-mail to cak4@case.edu.

COURSE PARTNERS WITH FISK UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Fisk University and Case Western Reserve University students will take a course in real time with the help of cameras and technology. Beginning this spring semester, students will take a course called "Multicultural Diversity, Social Inequality and the Pursuit of Health in Global Perspective." RESEARCH SHOWCASE 2004: THE FUTURE CONTINUES PLANNED

Live demonstrations on some research projects will be among the highlights of the University's Second Research Showcase. The daylong event spotlights the full range of innovative research projects being developed on campus by faculty and students and off campus by affiliated institutions. The event will be April 2. Friday, January 23
6:30 p.m. reception; 8:00 p.m. concert
The world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra will give a Special Tribute Concert to celebrate the Case Western Reserve University community. Refer to http://www.case.edu/events/ccc/.

Wednesday, February 4
4:00 p.m.
The University's College Scholars Program will welcome famed science fiction writer and satirist Kurt Vonnegut, author of "Slaughterhouse Five" and "Breakfast of Champions." Refer to http://www.duke.edu/~crh4/vonnegut/ and http://www.vonnegut.com/.

WOMEN'S GROUP MAKES MUSICAL TIE

Join the Cleveland Women's Connection on Wednesday, January 28, for a tour of and performance by the Cleveland Institute of Music, 11021 East Boulevard. Enjoy a light dinner before the concert. February 2004

Monday/9 Area alumni in Miami, FL, will meet for a reception at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, 500 Brickell Key Drive.

Tuesday/10 Area alumni in Palm Beach, FL, will meet for a luncheon at the Ritz-Carlton, 100 South Ocean Boulevard, in Manalapan, FL.

Naples area alumni will meet for a reception later that day at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, 851 Gulf Shore Boulevard North.

WANTED: A FEW GOOD BOOKS

Do you recall reading a book that had a profound effect on how you viewed your life and the world? Consider referring the book to the University's Common Reading Selection Committee. This committee is seeking a common reading assignment for incoming first-year students. The book can be a work of fiction or nonfiction.

INTEL SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH

Steven Brand, a postdoctoral student at the Weatherhead School of Management, is conducting research about students who once participated in such competitions as the Intel Science Talent Search, the Westinghouse Science Talent Search, and the
Siemen's Westinghouse Competition . Interested persons, aged 22 and older who participated in any of these programs while at the University, should send e-mail to ssb12@case.edu or call 330/864-1518 for details.

NOMINATE A DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE

The Undergraduate Alumni Association of Case Western Reserve University each year recognizes outstanding professional, civic, and volunteer achievement among bachelor-degree alumni with its awards of distinction. Use the nomination form online at http://www.case.edu/development/alum/www/UAAssoc/awards.html to recommend an alum for one of these awards: the Distinguished Alumni Award, the UAA's highest honor; the Young Alumni Award; and Newton D. Baker Distinguished Service Award. The deadline for completed nomination forms is February 27.

Novelist Michael Palmer (MED '68), whose latest book "Fatal" was issued in paperback last October, has a new book in progress. Using the working title, "The Hippocrates Society" the novel probes the life of a serial killer who kills CEOs of managed care companies.
