Advancing to a "New Normal"Lev Gonick, Case Western Reserve University's vice president for Information Technology Services and chief information officer, says dramatic change is happening, even with campus finances generally tight across the United States. His view is that what seems normal one day rapidly is becoming the "new normal."
About four years ago, Gonick decided that blogging a look back on each year's tech developments didn't set any agenda for change. So he decided to become a seer of the year ahead, a task much more challenging. He blogs about technology at Bytes From Lev in which he has posted "2010: The Year Ahead for IT in Higher Education." That's the theme for RecycleMania, an annual nationwide competition among colleges and universities. The 10-week event pits schools against each other to see which ones can motivate their campus communities to adopt and increase sustainable practices.
"Our goal is to beat last year's numbers," said Gene Matthews, director of facilities services. In 2009, Case Western Reserve finished near the top in the Waste Minimization category. This year "we want to win in all categories," Matthews explained.
The university aims to be "climate neutral," and RecycleMania is just one aspect of that commitment. Full story

Relay
for Life
Case Western Reserve University’s Relay for Life will take place in the North Residential Village Stadium on Friday, April 16 beginning at 6:00 p.m. and continuing until noon on Saturday, April 17.
This overnight event brings people together to raise money for the fight against cancer and awareness to support cancer research. After sunset, the night is brightened by the glow of illuminated bags called luminaries, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer.
Last year, more than 700 students, faculty, staff, and community members participated, and fifty different teams collectively raised more than $80,000 in support of the American Cancer Society.
If you are interested in supporting CWRU’s Relay, please visit www.relayforlife.org/cwru .
