University Time-Honored Traditions
Summer on the Cuyahoga
Over the past five summers, more than 700 students from Colgate, Cornell, Harvard, Princeton, Smith, Yale and Case Western Reserve University have made Cleveland their home for the summer and experienced the best the city has to offer. From cutting edge employment opportunities to hands on mentoring from community leaders, the students who participate in the Summer on the Cuyahoga internship program receive a lifetime of instruction and opportunity in the short span of a summer.
Summer on the Cuyahoga is driven by a collaborative effort among local alumni volunteers of the respective academic institutions. In partnership with employers and community leaders, the program showcases the region's opportunities to the student participants. The students live on Case's campus for 10 weeks and earn at least $2,800 by working paid internships at area companies, nonprofit organizations and public institutions. While most schools average a participation of 8 to 10 students, Case Western Reserve University generally enrolls 15 to 20 students annually. Part of the draw for many Case students is the potential for long term employment. According to Kathleen Norman, assistant director of student outreach in University Alumni Relations, "It's one of the major advantages for Case students. Often our students are offered the opportunity to extend their job throughout the remainder of the school year because they live in the Cleveland area."
Equally vital to the overarching experience is the connection students make with local alumni. Dedicated alumni from all the participating institutions devote substantial time to the program.
In addition to mentoring responsibilities, alumni often join students for social outings at such events such as Indians games, concerts and behind the scenes tours of local tourist attractions.
