Summer reading selection, Convocation speaker reflect campus Darwin Celebration
Case Western Reserve University's common reading selection—and its annual Fall Convocation speaker—for 2008 will help kick off the university's yearlong celebration of Charles Darwin.
To mark the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth (February 12, 1809)—and the 150th anniversary of the publication (November 24, 1859) of his influential book On the Origin of Species—the university will pay tribute to the British naturalist with a university-wide celebration from fall 2008 to summer 2009.
In keeping with this theme, the 2008 Common Reading Selection Committee has chosen The Reluctant Mr. Darwin: An Intimate Portrait of Charles Darwin and the Making of His Theory of Evolution by David Quammen as the assigned summer reading for all new undergraduate students.
Quammen also will be the featured speakers at the university's Fall Convocation, the first, formal celebration to kick off the new academic year, on August 28 in Severance Hall.
Alumnus makes final "cheer" for Case with $1.1 million bequest
John Oshchypok made a final cheer for his alma mater when he made a bequest of $1.1 million gift to advance energy-related research in the chemistry department. Oshchypok, as a young chemistry major at the former Case Institute of Technology, raised school spirit as the "A" on the Case cheering squad and urged the Rough Riders down the field for touchdowns in the early 1950's.
Oshchypok's generous gift will enable the College of Arts and Sciences to create the John Oshchypok Professor of Chemistry for 10 years. The new faculty position will be devoted to developing energy-related materials. In addition, the gift will support the start-up costs of establishing a lab, equipment and staffing research.
"Energy is a critical area for research, both in training students and in making a difference in our future," said Cyrus Taylor, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "Our chemistry faculty has the capacity to contribute to groundbreaking, foundational research that will advance the frontier of energy innovation, and this new position will allow Case Western Reserve to bring additional resources to this effort."

Beginning February 1, students, faculty and staff at Case Western Reserve's Cleveland, Ohio, campus will be participating in the nation's first trial of "2D codes"—commonly referred to as "QR Codes"—by bringing the cell phone technology to campus.

Mystery Bus Tours: A partnership dedicated to
enhancing the 2nd year student experience Three times a year, a group of 25 sophomores at CWRU expectantly gather to take a mystery outing. Their destination is secret, known only by Kathleen Norman, Assistant Director of Student Outreach in University Alumni Relations, and her partners in Residential Life.
The Mystery Bus program, now in its third year, is an outgrowth of the CWRU Alumni Association Academic and Student Committee. Hoping to increase opportunities for meaningful interaction between alumni and students the committee reached out to The Second Year Cohort committee.
The second year experience is largely focused on the theme of exploration. The Mystery Bus Program supports that tenet by providing students with the opportunity to network with alumni and participate in regional programs the general public cannot always access. Past trips have included locations such as Browns Stadium, Progressive Field and a private reception hosted by University Alumni Relations and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
If you are interested in becoming a Mystery Bus alumni host, please contact University Alumni Relations at 800-866-6280 or e-mail Kathleen.Norman@case.edu.
