CEO DICK CROSSLAND, CIT'65 and MGT'70, ANNOUNCES ESTABLISHMENT OF INTEGRATED GLOBAL LOGISTICS, LLC
We are pleased to announce that Integrated Global Logistics, LLC ( IGL) has been established with offices in Memphis, TN and Hudson, OH.  We are a multi-faceted, non-asset based logistics firm offering a full range of services and support to both shippers and carriers.  We are unique in that we focus on mid-sized clients.  Traditionally shippers with less than $10 million in freight costs were not large enough to interest the big third party logistics companies.  With continued logistics industry consolidation, this trend is worsening.  In similar fashion, carriers with fewer than 500 trucks have faced special challenges.  IGL is in business to help both.

FRANTZ WARD LLP ADDS CRAIG HARAN, LAW'00, TO HEALTH CARE PRACTICE
The Cleveland law firm Frantz Ward LLP has added Craig T. Haran to its health care practice. Mr. Haran is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Law, and received his undergraduate degree from John Carroll University. For the past five years, he has practiced with a health care boutique law firm in Pepper Pike, OH.

SURGEON'S PEN IS AS SHARP AS HIS SCALPEL
Dr. Sidney Schwab, MED'70, is retired from the highest of high-stakes careers. Sometimes he imagines how it would be if a surgeon could use bad-day excuses.

This perverse little fantasy borrows from athletic banter typical after a losing game. After an imagined operation, he bursts through the door of the waiting area and tells worried loved ones, "I just didn't have my suturing today. Tomorrow is another operation."

"You can't do that in surgery," said Schwab, 61, who worked as a general surgeon with The Everett Clinic from 1982 until 1999. Knives and lives are in a surgeon's hands. In Schwab's line of work, having a bad day is unthinkable.

Recently, he dipped a toe into another profession. The Everett doctor is now an author. His new book, "Cutting Remarks: Insights and Recollections of a Surgeon," has just been published by North Atlantic Books and Frog Ltd.

MUCH OF ENTREPRENEURIAL DRIVE IS GENETIC, NEW STUDY FINDS
Paper co-authored by professor from Weatherhead School of Management shows genetic predisposition toward entrepreneurism

Entrepreneurs are considered vital to the health of a region's or nation's economy since they create wealth and jobs. And while governments and business groups are always on the lookout for ways to spark entrepreneurship, no one knows precisely what leads people to start their own business. But a new study suggests that a substantial part of the answer can be found in an individual's genetic makeup.

BENEFITS (back to top)

OPENING THE PORTAL: CASE ALUMNI ONLINE LIBRARY NOW AVAILABLE
Necessity is the mother of invention – and other things. Dr. Fred H. Geisler (CIT'67) has been inventive in his medical career, but when he discovered a necessity at Case, he took steps to fulfill the need, and created one of those other things.

Last year, Geisler gave $15,000 to Case's Kelvin Smith Library (KSL), enabling it to create remote access to databases incorporating thousands of journals – encompassing hundreds of thousands of titles – for Case alumni. To the surprise of many alumni, this service had not been available before.

What gave Dr. Geisler the idea to fund this service? It was pretty simple: “I knew there was a need,” he says, “because when I tried, I couldn't do it.” There it is: the mother of invention.

Geisler, a neurosurgeon in Chicago, is one of the nation's leading authorities on spinal cord injuries and degenerative diseases of the spine. He is known for the development and use of innovative techniques to treat complex spine disorders. After graduating, in three years, from Case he went on to earn a Ph.D. in physics before becoming a neurosurgeon.
