CASE CAMPUS REMEMBERS "DOC OC" FOR HIS REMARKABLE TEACHING
Doc Oc, a classically trained pianist and prodigiously talented chemistry professor, came to the Case campus in 1980. Since that time, thousands of students have passed through his chemistry courses and have been infected by his energy, enthusiasm, and dedication. A 1993 Wittke Award winner, Doc Oc was a permanent fixture in the lives of students. He supported them outside the classroom as well as inside, whether it was through his celebrity judging of the Mr. CWRU contest, as Hudson Relay coach to the first-year class, or as fraternity advisor.

Advisor, teacher, mentor, and friend, Doc Oc will forever remain a part of the Case Western Reserve University family. Our community will come together to mourn his loss at a memorial service in the fall semester, when all of our students and faculty can be on campus to celebrate Doc Oc's remarkable life and contributions.

We realize that many of you will want to express your feelings and share your memories of Doc Oc, in addition to participating in his memorial. In the upcoming week, an online scrapbook will be established to capture our memories of Doc Oc as well as to plan for his memorial.

To Doc Oc's family and the many devoted friends, students, and colleagues who are grieving his passing, the university offers its deepest condolences. Doc Oc was an invaluable member of the Case community and we mourn our loss.

To read more and share your memories about Doc Oc, visit http://www.case.edu/news/2005/5-05/ocasio.htm.

CASE'S VISION YIELDS RECORD ENROLLMENTS

Case Western Reserve University's vision to build a powerful learning environment for its undergraduates has yielded one of its largest incoming first-year classes. Fall 2005 first-year enrollments are up 70 percent, with 1,152 students indicating they plan to come to Case to begin their university education in the fall.

“Very few universities or colleges can report this kind of increase in admissions that Case experienced this spring,” said Christopher Munoz, Case vice provost for undergraduate enrollment.

Dramatic enrollment increases were campus-wide with arts and humanities up 103 percent over 2004, engineering (89%), management (91%), sciences (50%) and undecided (69%). The mean SAT score of 1347 is an increase over the 2004 average score of 1324.

CASE JOINS INDEPENDENT 529 PLAN, PRE-PAY YOUR CHILD'S COLLEGE TUITION
Case recently joined the Independent 529 Plan, a prepaid college tuition plan tailored specifically for private colleges. Under the program, individuals can purchase tuition certificates that can be used for future tuition at Case. For example, by joining the program, the parents of an elementary-age child can now lock in the current tuition rate and redeem the certificate for use at Case if their child has been accepted to the university.

The Independent 529 Plan is run by the nonprofit Tuition Plan Consortium and administered by TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing, Inc. Funds saved can be used at any of the more than 240 participating colleges and universities around the country, including 14 in Ohio.

For more information about the plan, visit http://www.case.edu/news/2005/4-05/529plan.htm and http://www.independent529plan.org.

CASE DEDICATES PLAYGROUND FOR SHIRLEY HAWK, CHAMPION OF EDUCATION
Case Western Reserve University is proud of its history and tradition of contributing to the betterment of our communities through service and outreach to our fellow neighbors. For many decades, the university has played a pivotal role in improving the quality of life for others throughout the City of Cleveland and across the nation. Our vision goes beyond the confines of our campus to embrace our neighbors throughout the community.

Dr. Jacklyn Chisholm, Associate Vice President, Center for Community Partnerships, recently joined local community leaders and dignitaries to officially dedicate a playground for Mrs. Shirley Hawk, and long-time local community activist and champion of education, at Forest Hills Parkway Elementary School located on East 112th Street in Cleveland. As part of the university's second annual Case for Community Day last year, university volunteers donated and installed the playground at the elementary school. The Office of the President and Provost, Center for Community Partnerships, and Staff Advisory Council all contributed funds to purchase the playground for youth in the area.  Chisholm stated, “This is just one installment in a future for Cleveland that is filled with promise – and fun!”  Thank you to all that made this dedication possible.

CASE'S FRANCES PAYNE BOLTON SCHOOL OF NURSING ONE OF THE FIRST TO WITNESS BIRTH OF THE LATEST TEACHING TOOL: “SimBaby”
It cries, coughs, grunts, snores and responds to the human touch. It even vomits and wears a diaper. It's “SimBaby,” the latest technological birth and hands-on learning tool being used by neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) students at Case Western Reserve University's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. This month, the school will receive one of the first SimBaby simulators in the United States and the first one at a nursing school in Ohio.

SimBaby is a $28,000, high-tech robotic simulator that also breathes, has a pulse, and maintains heart rhythm and blood pressure. It can be programmed to simulate a range of illnesses and medical emergencies, including cardiac arrest and breathing difficulties. Students are told of SimBaby's “symptoms” and must perform the appropriate assessments and treatments. SimBaby's condition improves or deteriorates depending on the student's intervention.

CHRIS PAINTER '05, COMPASSION IS HIS MOTIVATION FOR SUCCESS

Chris Painter is part of the first generation in his family to attend college. He is graduating with a 4.0 GPA, majoring in Evolutionary Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. Painter was named President of Order of Omega at Case, initiated to its National Board of Directors, awarded the “David E. Michael Greek Man of the Year Award,” and directed campus forums on academic integrity and leadership. He will be attending the Yale School of Medicine in the fall.

“My time here at Case has given me the chance to reflect upon who I am, and where I have come from.  As a first generation college student, I was honored to be given the opportunity to apply the strong work ethic and determination I have learned from my parents to an academic environment in which I am able to not only better myself, but also the community surrounding and supporting me.”

Having logged hundreds of hours volunteering as a phone operator for the crisis hotline at the Cleveland Free Clinic, Painter has learned to calmly assist patients in coping with a myriad of volatile situations ranging from alcoholism to contemplation of suicide. By working with the Case Physiology and Biophysics departments, he has been able to further explore his desire to help others by researching the characterization of magnesium extrusion pathways in ventricular myocytes and its relation to alcoholism. Painter hopes that one day doctors may be able to pharmaceutically moderate the myocytes which may lead to a better understanding of the complex functions of alcoholism and diabetes.

UNDERWRITERS LABS CHOOSES MEDTRONIC EXECUTIVE, KEITH E. WILLIAMS ‘74
Chicago Tribune, April 5
By Mike Hughlett
Northbrook-based Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Monday announced that veteran medical equipment executive Keith E. Williams will be its new president and chief executive officer. Williams, most recently of Medtronic Inc., will start in May at UL, the world's leading safety testing organization. UL's last chief executive, 62-year-old Loring Knoblauch, retired last summer.

UL is an independent, not-for-profit company that tests more than 19,000 products annually. It employs 5,800 worldwide, including 1,450 in Northbrook. The 110-year-old organization had long captured nearly 100 percent of the product safety certification market, but its share had been whittled to about 50 percent in 2001 when Knoblauch became its CEO.

Williams, 52, was schooled as an engineer at Case Western Reserve University but has been a corporate manager for many years. The Nebraska native was most recently senior vice president in charge of Medtronic's neurological and ear, nose and throat business. He had joined Minneapolis-based Medtronic in 1997 as head of the company's Asia-Pacific operations.
