CHRIS MATTHEWS TO GIVE COMMENCEMENT KEYNOTE ADDRESS ON MAY 15TH
We are honored this year to have as our Commencement speaker Chris Matthews, distinguished author, international journalist, no-nonsense political commentator, and host of MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews and The Chris Matthews Show. As a speechwriter for President Carter and top aide to House Speaker Tip O'Neill, Matthews learned the political game through his work on the frontlines. We are excited to welcome Matthews back to campus: during his coverage of The Race at Case, he engaged our campus community, particularly our students, forging a mutual respect which is sure to be apparent in his address. We are confident that his incisive perspectives and remarks will connect with all of our graduates.
For more information about Commencement and Matthews, visit http://www.case.edu/commencement/news.html and http://www.case.edu/news/2005/2-05/matthews.htm.
UNIVERSITY ACCREDITATION
Case Western Reserve University has been accredited since 1913 by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, one of the six regional agencies that accredit U.S. colleges and universities at the institutional level. Accreditation provides assurance to the public and to prospective students that standards of quality have been met.
A team from the Commission will visit Case on April 11-13, 2005 to evaluate whether the University continues to meet the requirements for accreditation. To prepare for the visit, Case is conducting a wide-ranging self-study in which it assesses its own activities and accomplishments
against the Commission's criteria for accreditation. Learn more at http://www.case.edu/president/cir/accreditation/accredhome.htm.

Case Western Reserve University's Office of the Provost has launched a new Web site specifically for current and prospective lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) campus faculty, staff, students, alumni, and their allies. Already offering domestic partner benefits and campus support, the Web site deepens the University's commitment to encouraging and appreciating diversity on campus. “At Case Western Reserve University, tolerance and respect in our widely diverse culture is a core value, one we celebrate in many ways,” said Case president Edward M. Hundert, M.D. “We encourage and support diversity on this campus—and, in particular, our members who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. We are all privileged to live, work, and learn in this environment.” Learn more by visiting http://www.case.edu/provost/lgbt/ and http://www.case.edu/news/2005/2-05/lgtwebsite.htm.
STUDENT/ALUMNI ETIQUETTE RECEPTION A HUGE SUCCESS
On February 22nd, the Office of Alumni Relations, Programs, and Events along with the Upper Class Cohort Committee sponsored the “Wine, Dine and How to Act Fine” Etiquette Reception in Guilford Hall where over 50 students and 25 alumni attended. Facilitator Lorrie Bossart helped teach all generations the finer points of reception networking, from striking up an intelligent conversation to holding a plate, napkin and glass all in one hand. CASE ALUMNUS, MILAN DAYALAL '03 EMBA, CREATES RELIEF EFFORT FOR CHILDREN ORPHANED BY THE TSUNAMI
When the tsunami hit Sri Lanka on December 26, 2004, for Dayalal, a sales manager for ComDoc Inc. in Cleveland, it literally hit home. Dayalal came to the United States at age 18 from his birthplace in Colombo, Sri Lanka. After seeing the horrific pictures of the tsunami and its aftermath, Dayalal knew he wanted to help the 5,000 to 6,000 children orphaned by the disaster. Dayalal has since created his own 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Sri Lanka Tsunami Victim's Relief Fund, which will partner with Sardovaya to provide basic needs such as housing, food and clothing, and medical attention, to the orphans of the tsunami. Dayalal will be escorting the first group of physicians to Sri Lanka on March 4, at which time he will gather data and statistics on the number of children available for adoption. He has eight U.S. couples who are interested in adopting a child. Upon his return to the United States, he plans to coordinate his non-profit group with international adoption agencies here to help the agencies streamline the process of getting orphans into safe, loving homes. Ultimately he hopes to build an orphanage in Sri Lanka for these children. To learn more about this story, visit http://www.case.edu/news/2005/3-05/dayalal.htm
