CASE NEWS ACROSS THE NATION (back to top)

CASE COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO ASSIST IN TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORTS

On December 26, the tsunami in the Indian Ocean brought devastation to the people in the countries of that region, and our hearts go out to all of our fellow world citizens enveloped in this continuing tragedy.

In a global community like Case, events halfway around the world are felt as keenly as those around the corner. Our campus is home to 1,100 international students, a number of whom are from the affected nations, including 151 from India, 58 from Malaysia, 51 from Thailand, 12 from Indonesia, and one from Sri Lanka. Edith Berger and her staff in the Office of International Student Services (ISS) worked very hard to check on the safety of students who may have returned to their homelands over winter break. We are relieved to say that all of our students returned safely.

We continue to extend our deepest thoughts and prayers to our students and their families and friends in their home countries. Our thoughts also go out to our faculty and staff members and other members of our community who have loved ones in the region.

Below are various articles and relief efforts made by individuals and organizations partnered with Case.

The Public International Law & Policy Group (PILPG), which operates in association with Case's School of Law, has been nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize. PILPG was nominated for “significantly contributing to the promotion of peace throughout the globe by providing crucial pro bono legal assistance to states and non-state entities involved in peace negotiations and in bringing war criminals to justice.” One of the PILPG co-founders and directors is Michael Scharf, Professor of Law at the Case law school and director of the Frederick K. Cox International Law Center and its War Crimes Research Office. The winner will be announced December 10.

STEVEN PINKER, HARVARD PSYCHOLOGIST AND COGNITION EXPERT, TO INAUGURATE DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES AT CASE WESTERN RESRVE UNIVERSITYPhoto of Steven Pinker, Harvard Psychologist and Cognition Expert

An experimental psychologist by training, Pinker is the Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology at Harvard. His research focuses on issues connected with language, language development and human cognition. He is the author of several award-winning books including The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature (Penguin Books, 2002), an exploration of the political, moral and emotional colorings of the concept of human nature.

“We are delighted to welcome Professor Pinker as the first speaker in our Distinguished Lecture series,” said Case President Edward M. Hundert, M.D. “His stature in the field of psychology, along with his ability to make his work accessible to a general audience, typifies the qualities we seek for speakers in this series.”

CASE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING CELEBRATES 125 YEARS OF EDUCATION, INNOVATION AND GROWTH

Photo of student participating in Engineer's Week events. Now through the end of the 2005-2006 academic year, the University will celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Case School of Engineering. Opportunities for alumni of all ages to return to campus – such as Research ShowCASE 2005 (April), the NAE Energy Symposium (June) and various departmental and school events – will take place throughout the year. The centerpiece event of 125th anniversary celebration will be the campus-wide Alumni Weekend and Homecoming on October 14-16, 2005.

For more information on this milestone occasion, visit http://www.engineering.case.edu/125 and http://www.case.edu/news/2005/2-05/cseenvironment.htm.

(UPDATE) THOMAS SHULTZ, WINNER OF THE BAKER WALK DESIGN COMPETITION

Dr. Hundert presents Thomas Schultz, Assistant Professor of Accountancy in the Weatherhead School of Management and winner of the Baker Walk Design Competition, with a prize of $2,500. Schultz's concept, titled “Binary Code,” was one of 65 entries reviewed by a committee of individuals representing some of the diverse segments of the Case community. Binary code provides an approach for reducing data into a medium where it can be collected, processed, and analyzed. Ultimately, the most complex theoretical and applied concepts can be represented using binary code thereby promoting research, communication, and the exchange of ideas. Shultz concludes, “Just as binary digits can be reorganized and configured to represent future discoveries yet to be made, so can the people and resources of the CASE community be combined to create and sustain the most powerful learning environment in the world. A walkway inspired by the binary code offers a graphic reminder of these possibilities.”

ALUMNI HOUSE WILL CONNECT ALL

Whether our diplomas are from Adelbert College, Flora Stone Mather College, Cleveland College, Western Reserve University, Case Institute of Technology or Case Western Reserve University, alumni share common bonds as part of a world-class university. The University is creating a place where proud alumni will want to return--not just to visit but to advise, mentor, and learn.

Alumni House will be a place to meet, network, socialize, conduct business, interact with the campus community, and engage in other activities. President Hundert envisions Alumni House as a focal point where proud graduates will assemble throughout the year to participate in the life of their alma mater, share knowledge and experiences with students, rekindle friendships with classmates and professors, and help to chart the University's future.

TASK FORCE UPDATE (back to top)

The Alumni Task Force has worked diligently on a weekly basis (sometimes even more frequently) over the past six months to vet alumni perspectives about what they want and need in a new organization (its mission, vision, and values), what the new organization should be named, and how it ought to be organized in order to be successful.  Read the latest update on the progress of the Task Force as we continue to work towards the creation of a unified alumni association. Click here for the full story.

A CASE OF TRUE LOVE

The office of Alumni Relations, Programs, and Events would like to wish a Happy Valentine's Day to our 5,079 alumni couples. “Friends celebrate the things they have in common and delight in the things that make them different.” For most, it started out as a friendship with Case being something you would always have in common, and evolved into something much more. “In dreams and in love there are no impossibilities.” The University is ecstatic to have been matchmakers to so many. With 10,158 alumni married or partnered to another alumnus, our alumni couples make up 10.4% of our alumni population! Are you a Case Western Reserve University alumni couple that hasn't told us?…be sure to email us at devemail@case.edu.
