CASE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS DESIGNS WILLIAM J. CLINTON PRESIDENTIAL CENTER
James Polshek, a 1973 Case graduate, was one of two lead architect designers for the recently completed William J. Clinton Presidential Center. After a nationally televised celebration, the $165 million William J. Clinton Presidential Center is now open.
Clinton said in a statement that he was very appreciative of Polshek and his architecture crew. "Their many outstanding architectural achievements have enriched all our lives, and I am especially grateful for their work on my presidential library," he said. "This honor is well-deserved."
In the process, Polshek was awarded a National Design Award for excellence in architecture, and the University's Distinguished Alumni Award. The Polshek Partnership is currently working on the new Newseum, a museum of journalism, scheduled to open in 2006 in Washington , D.C.

BAKER BUILDING TEARDOWN INVOKES OPPORTUNITY & COMPETITION FOR NEW CAMPUS ENTRANCE
The Baker Building has been slowly preparing for dismantling over the past year. A familiar feature at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Adelbert Road for more than 45 years, began destruction on November 29th. http://observer.case.edu/cgi-bin/article.py?id=141
As a result, the Office of Alumni Relations, Programs, and Events has moved to a temporary home as the University prepares to extend its campus to downtown Cleveland. The division will now occupy offices on the fourth floor of University West/Bio Enterprise Building as we anticipate our move to the historic Halle Brothers Company building later this year.
The alumni relations office and other units at the site include the Annual Fund, the Center for Community Partnerships, Information Services, and several University Marketing and Communications staff. Likewise, these units have plans to move to the Halle Building next year. The alumni relations office is also preparing a satellite student/alumni relations office in Thwing Center.
Baker's demolition is allowing students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to make a lasting impression on campus through the BAKER WALK DESIGN COMPETITION. Contestants were encouraged to draw inspiration from their academic disciplines, interests, and hobbies to create their paving pattern. The new landscape design will include as a "main event," a stone path leading from the corner of Euclid Avenue at Adelbert Road into the Case quad. This space and its featured walkway will provide a more inviting entrance into the campus. The project is part of the Site and Landscape Master Plan for the university and the first of three interconnected landscape spaces. The goal of these landscaped spaces is to unify the campus.
THE SOURCE (SUPPORT OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ENDEAVORS)
The SOURCE (Support of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors) is a new office that was created to support and promote the research and creative efforts of our undergraduate students, and will serve as an important component in helping Case achieve its vision for experiential education for our undergraduates.
Dr. Sheila Pedigo has been appointed as Case's new Director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors, effective December 1. In this newly established position, Dr. Pedigo will develop and administer the SOURCE programs for undergraduate research and creative projects at Case. Her charge will include supporting and promoting undergraduate research and creative projects, facilitating and preparing students to undertake these activities, and assisting faculty in their efforts to obtain outside funding for undergraduate projects.
Dr. Pedigo brings excellent credentials and experience to this position. She was previously the director of undergraduate research at the Case School of Engineering. Before joining Case last year, she held positions as vice president for student life and dean of students at Saint Mary College in Leavenworth , Kansas , where she was also an adjunct instructor.Dr. Pedigo holds a Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership from the University of Kansas.
NATIONAL BRIEFING – SCIENCE AND HEALTH: DRUGS COULD FIGHT BRAIN INFECTION
By DONALD G. MCNEIL JR. (NYT)
Published: November 19, 2004, Friday in The New York Times
A deadly brain infection that kills up to 5 percent of AIDS patients may theoretically be prevented by several drugs already in use, a new study has found. The study, published in Science magazine, was conducted by researchers from Brown University and Case Western Reserve University 's medical school. The disease, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or P.M.L., is caused by a virus that can invade the brain of patients with severely compromised immune systems. Half of those with such infections die within 18 months; most of the rest are severely brain-damaged. The virus was shown to gain access to the brain through a receptor that can be blocked by several drugs that already have Food and Drug Administration approval, said Dr. Walter J. Atwood, the Brown microbiologist who led the study. Donald G. McNeil Jr. (NYT)

The Alumni Forum held at the end of July brought more than 100 alumni, along with undergraduate and graduate students and university staff members, together for two days of in-depth discussion about their aspirations for what a bold, new alumni organization ought to do for alumni, for students, and for the university. The participants were notable for their dedication to the university and their diversity - coming from across the country and representing 21 different schools and affinity groups, more than five decades of graduation years, and a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. The goal of the forum is to create a bold, new alumni organization to be launched in July 2005.
