CASE IMPROVING CLIMATE FOR WOMEN FACULTY WITH HELP FROM NSF GRANT

Case has received a 5 year, $3.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation for a program to increase the number of tenure-track women teaching in the sciences and engineering fields. “Hiring more women in the sciences and engineering is not just a matter of fairness, but affects the university's standing in the academic world” says Lynn T. Singer deputy provost and vice president for academic affairs.

CHARLES E. ROZEK NAMED NEW DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES

President Hundert has named Charles E. Rozek, associate professor and associate chair of biology at Case Western Reserve University, dean of the School of Graduate Studies at Case Western Reserve University. “I welcome the opportunity to bring my experience at Case and the College of Arts and Sciences to the challenge of continuing to make the office of graduate studies responsive to both the needs of the students and the faculty in facilitating the educational process,” Rozek said.

CASE ALUM DESIGNS WILLIAM J. CLINTON PRESIDENTIAL CENTER

James Polshek, a 1973 Case graduate, was one of two lead architect designers for the recently completed William J. Clinton Presidential Center. In the process, Polshek was awarded a National Design Award for excellence in architecture. Among the most notable projects for the Polshek Partnership are the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, the Center for the Arts Theater at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco, and the new Newseum, a museum of journalism, scheduled to open in 2006 in Washington, D.C.

After a nationally televised celebration, the $165 million William J. Clinton Presidential Center is now open. The structure, designed to feel airy and inviting, also mimics six industrial bridges that span the river and contribute to the city's aesthetic.

Clinton said in a statement that he was very appreciative of Polshek and his architecture crew. "Their many outstanding architectural achievements have enriched all our lives, and I am especially grateful for their work on my presidential library," he said. "This honor is well-deserved."

RACE AT CASE: CAUSE AND EFFECT

After the Vice Presidential debate had ended, and the newscrews have all packed up their cameras, it was easy to see the positive impact this event has had on the University. The nationally broadcast event marked a new milestone in Case's path towards becoming the "World's Greatest Learning Environment." Edwards and Cheney faced increased pressure to perform well one week after the first Presidential Debate which had tightened most national polls that followed. After months of preparation and organization, Case University was well posed to serve as the perfect battleground for these contenders. President Hundert put it best when he said, "In the past we've talked about the synergy and success that can be achieved as One Great University. The national impact of the Race at Case helps us all fully understand the remarkable potential being unleashed as we come together in so many important ways."
