Science Café Cleveland presents

"Developing Latent Fingerprints: The Real CSI"

FEBRUARY 8, 2010

FEATURING:

Mr. Dan Winterich, J.D.
Senior Special Agent, Crime Scene Unit
Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation
and
Ms. Michelle Snyder, M.S.
Forensic Scientist, Latent Print Unit
Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation

EVENT INFORMATION:

Our experts will introduce the audience to some of the various techniques used to develop latent fingerprints (technically known as "friction ridge skin impressions"). Techniques to be discussed include conventional powders and chemical processes, along with advanced techniques such as lifting prints from human skin. They will answer questions from both the crime scene and laboratory perspectives.

Come to February's Science Café Cleveland to talk with "real" CSI experts and learn how crimes are solved in reality, not as they are depicted on CSI-type TV shows.

Did you know:

• Fingerprints were used in China perhaps as early as 300 B.C. as proof of a person’s identity.

• In the United States, fingerprints have been used since 1902.

• For more interesting facts on the history of fingerprinting, check out the chapter by Jeffery G. Barnes in the book The Fingerprint Sourcebook (by Scientific Working Group on Friction Ridge Analysis, Study and Technology, September 2009). Barnes' chapter is Chapter 1: History.
