CWRU Chapter of the American Association of University
Professors
Some FAQs about
joining the CWRU AAUP Chapter
- Is the AAUP a union?
Not at CASE. At some other schools
the AAUP chapter acts as the Faculty's collective bargaining agent.
- So why is the AAUP at
CWRU?
The following 1940 AAUP Statement has been officially endorsed by CWRU as
a member of the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
"Academic freedom and economic security, hence,
tenure, are indispensable to the success of an institution in fulfilling its
obligations to its students and to society."
The members of the CWRU AAUP Chapter strive to ensure that
this and other principles of the AAUP are understood and adhered to at CWRU.
- Why does CWRU need
an AAUP Chapter?
The current political and economic climate places great pressure on
universities. This situation contributes to the erosion of tenure, e.g. by
the hiring of non-tenure-track and part-time faculty, or by the failure of
the institution to abide by the rules in the Faculty Handbook.
- What does the CWRU
AAUP Chapter do?
For almost seventy years, the CWRU Chapter has assisted the administration
and individual faculty members in understanding the AAUP principles and in
applying them to cases involving promotions, reappointments, procedures in
the pre-tenure period, the closing of departments, and other issues which
affect our faculty. The CWRU AAUP periodically arranges open meetings in
which faculty may interact with administrators and invited speakers. In
addition, they are often called upon to assist faculty members who feel
that they have been treated unfairly.
- Why should you join
the AAUP?
To do your part in continuing the tradition of academic freedom at CWRU.
- What are the annual
dues of the AAUP?
For non-tenured faculty, new to the AAUP, for the first 4 years: $91 per
year.
For full-time members $180 per year.
