The Dittrick Medical History Museum, founded in the late l9th century, is one of the largest museums of its kind in the country. Exhibits tell the story of doctors and patients in the Western Reserve from the earliest days of settlement into the 20th century. The life and education of the doctor, the instruments used, and the great changes in medicine, as well as what the patient faced, are all chapters in the story. The museum is part of the Dittrick Medical History Center, which is a center for research in the history of medicine and medical technology. It is a division of the Cleveland Medical Library Association and affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences of Case Western Reserve University. The Museum has the most comprehensive collection of l9th and early 20th century surgical instruments in the United States. It is the only museum in northern Ohio devoted to the history of medicine. The Museum hosts several public lectures on the history of medicine throughout the year.
