[CWRU] [Cleveland Clinic Foundation] [Edison Biotechnology Center]
| The Center for Cardiovascular Biomaterials was established on behalf of a consortium of Case Western Reserve University, the University of Cincinnati, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and the Edison BioTechnology Center. The Center is comprised of integrated resources that provide expertise and state-of-the-art facilities in key areas of cardiovascular biomaterials research, including new cardiovascular biomaterials, structure and property analysis, biopolymer and biomaterial interfaces, biocompatibility, cell dynamics and analysis, and biomedical device evaluation. The research mission of the Center is to foster direct links from academic research to the biomedical and health care industries. The major goals of the Center are to foster innovative cross-disciplinary and inter-institutional research, directed towards the development of new cardiovascular biomaterials, and to enhance | and promote education and training in biomedical engineering and life science. This philosophy is intended to emphasize and exploit new opportunities for technology transfer. The graduate education and training program stimulates a strong synergistic relationship between the research and educational components of the program. The resources and facilities of the Center for Cardiovascular Biomaterials are based at Case Western Reserve University, the University of Cincinnati, and The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Each resource offers a well-defined research thrust area in cardiovascular biomaterials that is under the guidance of its director, and provides state-of-the-art equipment, facilities, and technical and experimental expertise. Collaborative research teams provide the specific expertise associated with a particular biomaterials project. |
The Triumvirate Roger Marchant is the Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Biomaterials. As an Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University, he heads the polymer research group comprised of six graduate students and numerous undergraduate students. Laboratory facilities under his direction include an Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) lab, organic synthesis lab, and a thin films lab.

| Our Goal . . .The mission of the CCB is to develop fundamental research programs and enhance engineering student training and education in the field of cardiovascular biomaterials. The mission aims to emphasize and foster direct links from academic research to the biomedical industry and to facilitate progress from basic research to the clinical environment. The goals of the CCB are (1) to foster innovative cross-disciplinary research in biomaterials science and engineering directed towards the development of new cardiovascular biomaterials; (2) to develop an education and training program in cardiovascular biomaterials that provides a challenging integration of engineering and life science; (3) to provide investigators with unique opportunities to achieve innovative and ambitious research objectives in biomaterials through access to state-of-the-art facilities in key areas of biomaterials research; and (4) enhance research collaborations between academia and the biomedical and health care industries, and stimulate new business in the biomedical industrial sector of Ohio by increasing opportunities for technology transfer from academia. These aims are fostered by emphasizing the goal oriented, problem solving mission of the Center. CCB provides hands-on experience and expert technical supervision with state-of-the-art instrumentation for faculty, students, and visitors from academia and industry. Research programs cover areas from basic research to clinical studies relating to biomaterials. This includes new cardiovascular biomaterials and devices, model polymer surfaces, protein adhesion, cell-surface and receptor-ligand interactions, mechanisms of surface induced thrombosis, bacterial adhesion and infection, biocompatibility, biosensors, blood compatibility, and cardiovascular device development and evaluation. The Research Center provides a focus for enhancing collaborative research activities, while the Cost Center enables investigators from different departments and Institutions to access our extensive shared-use equipment and facilities. The CCB now involves thirty-two affiliated faculty from engineering, physical science, and medical science departments at CWRU and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Still need more...
