Case Western Reserve University offers research opportunities for minority undergraduate students in science and engineering. Students spend ten weeks working in a research laboratory or research program under the direction of a faculty member. They also attend lectures by science and engineering faculty and give poster presentations at the end of the program. The Summer Undergraduate Research Program includes a stipend, plus support for housing, meals, travel, and supplies.

The ACES program will run from May 27 through August 1, 2008. This is a hands-on, intensive program that seeks to attract minority undergraduate students to pursue research careers in science and engineering. Students are assigned a faculty mentor with related research interests. Students learn new skills and gain valuable experience by contributing to ongoing research activities. The application deadline for this year was March 17, 2008.

In summer 2004, seven students conducted research at Case. Five students came from Fisk University: Ami Barry, Kiedra Kinkaide, Shayla Merry, Elizabeth Stewart, and April Walls. Dionne Griffin came from Edinboro University. Vivien Rico came from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. All of the students presented their research in a public poster session.

In summer 2005, nine students conducted research at Case. Ami Barry and Kiedra Kinkaide from Fisk University and Dionne Griffin from Edinboro University returned this year. Jourdan Bowe, Dyianweh Queh, and Edema Ojomo came from Fisk University. Susana Lopez came from Barry University. Irelys A. Cruz López came from the University of Puerto Rico at Ponce. Willania Studemire from Case Western Reserve University also participated.

ACES students do not spend all of their time conducting research. They take part in all social events and outings in cooperation with HCEM and SPUR program students, including trips to Cedar Point, a guided tour of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Reinberger Hall of Earth and Planetary Exploration, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Cleveland Botanical Gardens, and a behind the scenes look at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
