DEPARTMENT INITIATIVE GRANTS
Application Process
ACES has given out
Departmental Initiative Grants (DIGs) for
department-wide activities in the 31 NSF-fundable
Science and Engineering departments.
These grants advanced the ACES mission and
goals and supported initiatives to improve
climate, enhance collegiality, stimulate greater
inclusion of women and minority faculty, and
promote positive department change.
Any department faculty member could apply.
Awards up to $10,000 were given to departments.
Examples of fundable initiatives are to:
- (a) Strengthen the internal academic networks through
seminars, strategic planning, or a department retreat
- (b) Increase external visibility through departmental
web site development, student or faculty
exchange, campus visits, or creation of
marketing/publicity materials
- (c) Faculty development through sponsoring
faculty to attend professional, academic, scientific
workshops, or training
- (d) Build the department’s social infrastructure
by fostering/creating regular social interaction
among faculty
- (e) Diversify the hiring candidate pools and undertake
other activities related to enhanced recruitment
Proposal deadlines are October 15th & May 15th annually.
Application Process
The $5,000- $10,000 award was to be spent by the department during the year of the award. Applications included:
- • Statement of the overall initiative and how it will advance ACES goals (1 -2 page narrative)
- • Description of the process undertaken to include inputs from faculty in the development of the plan (1 -2 page narrative)
- • Activities proposed (outline/timeline and narrative, 1 -2 pages)
- • Evaluation of the initiative – process for reporting to the ACES Co-PIs about the effectiveness of the initiative. (narrative or other format, 1 -2 pages)
